HEAD-BANGING. Some children include head-banging as part of a complex arm-swinging, foot-thrashing tantrum. More often it is simply something your child does when he is frustrated, either because you won’t allow him do something, or he can’t figure out how to do it.

As you can imagine, this is a very difficult behavior to ignore, particularly if your toddler chooses to bang his head on the hardwood floor of the dining room. Nonetheless, ignoring is still the best approach. Your child will not damage his brain by head-banging. He may develop a bruise and the skin over his forehead may become temporarily thickened and discolored, but his body is programmed to stop banging well before he damages his brain.

Another approach is to pad the bars and ends of your child’s crib with blankets (this may require some duct tape). After a few episodes, you will be able to anticipate when a confrontation is going to prompt a bout of head-banging. Scoop your child up and place him in the padded crib. He will receive much less physical gratification from banging on a padded surface, and of course you are less likely to worry.

Don’t confuse head-banging done in anger or frustration with the rhythmic head-banging that some normal children (and adults) do to relax and/put themselves to sleep. This self-pacification is not a behavior that requires a response on your part. However, if it is occurring frequently, it is another message that your child is overtired.
